Approved by the State Council, China's Cabinet, POWERCHINA is a wholly State-owned company.

It was founded on the basis of 14 provincial, municipal and district electric power survey and design, engineering and equipment manufacturing enterprises. These were formerly affiliated to Sinohydro Group Ltd, HydroChina Corporation, the State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid Co Ltd.

POWERCHINA is directly managed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.

The company is a global leader in the field of clean and low-carbon energy, water resources and environmental construction. It is also a backbone force in global infrastructure interconnections and is a leading enterprise serving construction for the Belt and Road Initiative.

It is a dynamic engineering construction investment developer. As such, it provides investment financing, planning and design, construction contracting, equipment manufacturing and management. It operates an integrated service for the entire industry chain, as well as a package of overall solutions for customers, both at home and abroad.

In addition, entrusted by various state ministries and commissions, POWERCHINA undertakes planning and review functions for the national hydropower, wind power and solar power sector, as well as for other forms of clean energy.

It ranked 157th among Fortune Global 500 companies and 41st among Top 500 Enterprises of China in 2020. It placed first in 2020 on the list of the top 150 engineering design companies and came in fifth among the world's 250 largest global contractors according to ENR.

POWERCHINA currently operates nine national research and development institutions, eight academicians' workstations and also has eight postdoctoral workstations.

In addition, POWERCHINA has won 112 national science and technology awards and 2,722 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards, as well has holding 14,841 patents.
