Former Peking University vice-president Ren Yuzhong has been indicted on bribery charges, according to a statement issued by the Supreme People's Procuratorate on Wednesday.

The SPP said the case was recently filed by the Dandong People's Procuratorate in Liaoning province with the Dandong Intermediate People's Court.

The case was previously investigated by the National Commission of Supervision and transferred to prosecutors for review and prosecution. Under the SPP's designation, the Liaoning Provincial People's Procuratorate approved Ren's arrest on suspicion of bribery.

During the review and prosecution stage, prosecutors informed Ren of his procedural rights, questioned him and heard the opinions of his defense counsel, the SPP said.

Prosecutors alleged that Ren took advantage of his former positions — including deputy director and director of the Policy Research Office of the Communist Party of China Peking University Committee, head of the university's human resources department, head of the publicity department of the university's Party committee, and later member of the standing committee of the university's Party committee and vice-president — to seek benefits for others and illegally accept money and valuables in return. The amount involved was especially huge, and prosecutors said Ren should be held criminally liable for bribery.

Ren, 46, a native of Sichuan province, graduated from the School of International Studies at Peking University and worked at the university for many years.

He was appointed head of the publicity department of the university's Party committee and university spokesman in 2020, became a member of the standing committee of the university's Party committee and secretary-general in 2023, and was promoted to vice-president in 2024.

He came under investigation in September 2025. In December that year, he was expelled from the Communist Party of China and removed from public office. His suspected criminal case was then transferred to prosecutors for review and prosecution, along with the assets involved.
