Jiading district was formerly known as Jiading county. Jiading first became a county over 800 years ago in 1218. It became a district of Shanghai in October 1992. Currently, the district has seven towns, three sub-districts and two management committees in its jurisdiction.

The seven towns are Anting, Malu, Nanxiang, Jiangqiao, Waigang, Xuhang and Huating, and the three sub-districts are Jiading town, Xincheng Road and Zhenxin. In addition, the district has two management committees, respectively, for Jiading Industrial Zone and Juyuan New Area.

It has 110 neighborhood committees, 160 village committees and 2,079 village groups. By the end of 2010, the district had a total of 185,600 households and a registered population of 537,900. Among them, 434,000 were non-agricultural residents. The population density reached 1,160 per square kilometer, and the natural population growth rate was 0.35 percent. The transient population was 767,500 as of the end of 2010.

Anting Town (安亭鎮)

The town houses Shanghai International Automotive City. The town covers an area of 60.15 square kilometers. It has a household population of 55,700, nine community committees, 28 village committees and four villa area committees in its jurisdiction.
