Prosecutors nationwide charged more than 62,000 people for telecom fraud offenses from January to November last year, the Supreme People's Procuratorate revealed on Wednesday.

Authorities also approved the arrest of over 4,300 fraud suspects repatriated from northern Myanmar and prosecuted more than 11,000 repatriated individuals, forming a strong deterrent against cross-border fraud, it said.

Cases involving criminal syndicates operating in northern Myanmar represent a typical example of China's lawful exercise of judicial jurisdiction over serious cross-border crimes, including the punishment of foreign ringleaders, underscoring the country's firm resolve to protect its citizens' lives and properties, it said.

Du Xueyi, head of the SPP's economic crime prosecution department, said the handling of cases of this nature has upheld the country's rule-of-law authority and delivered positive legal, social and international outcomes.

Procuratorates in the provinces of Zhejiang, Guangdong and Fujian handled major cases involving several large cross-border criminal groups, with the SPP providing full-process supervision and guidance.

Courts have successfully concluded trials involving two of the syndicates, sentencing 16 defendants to death with immediate execution, seven to death with a two-year reprieve, and 16 to life imprisonment.

In addition, authorities have also targeted online networks that provide support to fraud operations. Between January and November 2025, prosecutors charged more than 29,000 people for assisting information network criminal activities.

Recognizing that telecom fraud is a global challenge, China has actively promoted international cooperation through bilateral and multilateral mechanisms and participated in negotiations on the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, which China signed in October 2025, Du said.
