JAKARTA - An official at Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) said that 12 out of 46 registered political parties have failed to meet basic administration requirements, and are therefore ineligible to take part in the 2014 general election, local media reported on Wednesday.

"The 12 parties have failed to fulfill all 17 items of administration requirements, hence the eliminations," KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik said on Tuesday.

KPU commissioner Ida Budhiati said the remaining 34 registered political parties would still undergo a series of verification processes before being declared as participants in the 2014 general election.

"At the first stage, the 34 parties are required to complete further administration requirements before September 29," she said as quoted by the Jakarta Post.

All nine parties in the parliament have also registered with the KPU and all passed the first administration checks.

The 2014 elections will select eligible candidates to sit in the parliament, elect new president replacing Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who has served in two maximum presidency periods allowed by the existing law.
