Alexia Foundation

Alexia Foundation Organization introduction:

The Alexia Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 by Dr. and Mrs. Peter Tsairis in honor of their daughter, Alexia, a victim of the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Alexia was a promising photojournalism student at The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University.

Each year, the Alexia competition, held under the auspices of the Newhouse School, awards grants to photojournalists whose work gives insight into cultural differences and gives voice to victims of social injustice. Since its inception, the foundation has supported the work of accomplished amateur and professional photojournalists whose compelling visual narratives demonstrate the power of documentary photography. To date, these grants have been awarded to more than 84 undergraduates and more than 14 professionals.

Curator career

James C. Dooley is the Executive Administrator of the Alexia Foundation for World Peace and Cultural Understanding Through Photography. He has been a journalist and editor for more than 40 years at several American newspapers including The Los Angeles Times and Newsday in New York. He has lectured on photojournalistic ethics in China, Turkey, Russia, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Prague and the United States. He is the founding president of the Associated Press Photo Managers organization. He has taught photojournalism at Adelphi University and lectured at Renmin University in Beijing and Dalian College of Image Arts in Dalian, China. He has been a Fulbright Specialist in Photojournalism in residence at the Dalian College of Image Arts/Bolton University Master's program in International Photojournalism.
