Fraudulent mother bankrupts son

A mother in her 50s, who goes by the name "Beauty" and falsely represented herself as the sister of a local leader, was detained by police on Sept 16, accused of tricking her son out of his fortune, jinbaonet.com reported on Wednesday.

The man and his father had accumulated some wealth after starting a business in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The death of the man's father in 2004 brought Beauty to Xinjiang from Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province. She managed to convince her son to move to Ningbo after selling his property for 400,000 yuan ($65,106). She took the money with a promise to procure a good job for him with the help of her so-called "brother", but never delivered on her pledge.

Woman from wealthy family stole for kicks

An 18-year-old woman from a wealthy family robbed express packages from delivery men on two occasions just for the thrill of it, the Modern Times (kb.dsqq.cn) reported on Wednesday.

The girl placed orders online, requiring payment in cash on delivery. When receiving the arrival notices, she rode an electric motorcycle to grab the packages from the delivery men without making payment. The police discovered the girl came from a well-off merchant family newly moved to the city. She had few friends and lacked parental care, the girl said.

Mom pulls the plug on 'virtual girlfriend'

A woman frustrated by her 23-year-old son's addiction to his "virtual girlfriend" chat software reported him to police, the Chongqing Commercial Daily reported on Tuesday.

Police heard that Wei Wei spent five days, totaling nearly 60 hours, chatting with a "virtual girlfriend", which cost him 20 yuan ($3.26) a day. "She" provided services such as morning greetings, as well as responding to complaints and offering "chicken soup for the soul". Wei's mother called the police for fear that he was being cheated online.

Cocky thief calls owner of stolen phone for password

A brazen thief sent a message to the owner of a cellphone he stole asking for the power-on password, the Chongqing Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

A woman surnamed Liu left her handbag and cellphone in her office but found them missing when she came back. About a fortnight later, Liu received a message claiming that if she divulged the cellphone's power-on password, she would get her handbag back. Liu called the police whose investigations found the culprit to be a colleague of the woman.
