Liangjiang New Area's Guoyuan Port is expected to become another departure station for the Sino-European railway, local media reported on Oct 13.

Guoyuan Port in the southwestern city of Chongqing, regarded as the "golden gateway" to the vast inland area, lies at the head of the Yangtze River, while Shanghai lies at its tail.

Liangjiang New Area this year signed a strategic framework agreement with YUXINOU (Chongqing) Logistics Co Ltd to develop Guoyuan Port into a multi-mode transport hub for Sino-Euro trains.

Singapore's Freight Links Group and Figtree Group plan to invest 200 million yuan ($30.35 million) to build a centralized logistics system at the port by attracting freight forwarding and logistics companies to Chongqing.

Xie Jing, head of the free trade department of Liangjiang New Area, said that Guoyuan Port has submitted applications to the central government to set up a multi-mode transport supervision center to improve the port's policy services.

Guoyuan Port is the largest port in Chongqing, which is the largest city on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The port is planning to increase throughput by promoting intermodal transport and improving trans-shipment efficiency to take advantage of China's "Mother River" and become a major international inland port.

Statistics reveal that Guoyuan Port had handled 7.75 million tonnes of cargo by the end of this August with a year-on-year increase of 10 percent, becoming a new engine of turnover growth for Chongqing ports.

Chongqing Cuntan Port has transferred parts of its freight throughput to Guoyuan Port, realizing an administrative mode for integrating operations. The effort will promote resource utilization and collaboration in developing local ports.
