It's a practical rule in Europe coming from the old ages to test if it's real gold by biting it. At that time some coins were made in gold and faking money was so common.That's why today athlets reproduce the ancient way to test medals by meaning "hey, this is real gold, I won it!" even if everybody knows medals are made with different metal alloys.
