Alves eyes piece of Paris history

Brazil international Dani Alves said on Wednesday the prospect of "making history" by winning the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain factored into his decision to join the French heavyweight.

Alves was unveiled as the club's second signing of the summer after inking a two-year deal on a free transfer following his exit from Juventus last month.

The move is a blow to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who wanted to bring 34-year-old Alves to the Premier League. Guardiola managed him at Barcelona, where the rightback won three Champions Leagues and six Spanish league titles.

Ex-FIFA official Blazer dead at 72

Former top soccer official Chuck Blazer, whose evidence to US investigators helped trigger the FIFA corruption scandal, has died, his lawyers said on Wednesday.

Blazer, who was banned for life from all soccer activities for corruption in 2015, had been battling cancer up to his death. He was 72.

"We are truly saddened by the passing of our client and friend, Chuck Blazer," his lawyers said in a statement.

"His misconduct, for which he accepted full responsibility, should not obscure his positive impact on soccer."

Disgraced Lochte back competing

Ryan Lochte is returning to USA Swimming competition this week for the first time since his 10-month suspension for his behavior at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics ended.

The 32-year-old will compete at the LA Invitational, which begins on Thursday on the Southern California campus where he trains and represents Trojan Swim Club.

The six-time Olympic gold medalist is entered in the 50 and 100m freestyles and 200 individual medley. His times of 48.16 seconds in the 100 free and 1:54.00 in the IM are top-seeded.

Lochte was suspended after falsely claiming he and three US teammates were robbed at gunpoint at a Rio service station during last summer's Games.

Trash talk proves taxing for Floyd

UFC star Conor McGregor played to a partisan Toronto audience and made fun of boxer Floyd Mayweather's tax problems on the second stop of their four-city promotional tour.

They are scheduled to meet in a boxing match Aug 26 in Las Vegas.

McGregor, one of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts, was clearly the fan favorite on Wednesday, with the crowd chanting "Pay your taxes! Pay your taxes!" at Mayweather. The IRS still has Mayweather on the hook for $7.2 million in taxes from 2010, according to records.
