A man in Taizhou turned up on the doorstep of his ex-fiancee on her wedding night and yelled at her through a megaphone. The man demanded that his former lover return the betrothal money and debts he claimed she and her family owe him. He said he gave the woman 88,000 yuan ($12,800) for their engagement four years ago and his family also lent 140,000 yuan to her father. The pair apparently lost contact after she broke off the engagement, but he recently found out where she lived. He said she would not let him in, which is why he resorted to the megaphone.

Police arrest teen over hit-and-run

A 17-year-old high school student in Sheyang county, Yancheng, has been detained on suspicion of causing the death of a pedestrian in a hit-and-run. A man has been detained in Xinyu for allegedly hiding inside a department store until it closed so that he could steal 70,000 yuan ($10,200) worth of jewelry and luxury goods. Police said surveillance footage showed the suspect entering an area of the store that was undergoing renovations with two quilts he had taken from the bedding section. He is also accused of taking a number of items under the cover of darkness before exiting the store once it had opened the following day. Many of the items were later recovered from the suspect's hotel room, officers said.

A 51-year-old migrant worker from Anhui province was put in a detention house in Taizhou for five days on March 17 after he stole tonic wine from a supermarket because he thought it would cure his impotence. The thief, surnamed Cheng, told officers that he stole the wine because he did not have enough money to buy both it and some flowers for his mistress, surnamed Guo. He was also fined 500 yuan ($73).

Fishing boat injures elderly swimmer

A 63-year-old woman was hospitalized after being hit by a fishing boat while swimming in Hangzhou's Qiantang River on March 23.
