Making fire to celebrate Spring Festival

The rich coal resources of Datong, Shanxi province, has a great influence on local people's daily life.It has also had an impact on local customs since ancient times, for example, Sheng Wang Huo (making a fire).

At New Year's Eve, people construct a coal tower in front of their houses. They call the tower Wang Huo (burning fire) which symbolizes their hope for a prosperous year. Firewood and a large red note writing “soaring prosper” are installed inside the coal tower.

At midnight, the coal tower is lit up and flames come out through numerous holes, like a Fotu (the Buddhist pagoda). A spectacular scene as it is, it keeps out the cold as well.

Adults and children sit around in a circle, some play games and set off firecrackers. Men and women, the old and the young, come together to nurse the fire, hoping to achieve “soaring prosperity”. Children will walk around and comment on the size of every family’s fire tower. It is believed that the household with largest bonfire gets the most “soaring prosperity”.

Today, this custom is still honored. It is recognized not only in the New Year, but also at big events, such as weddings, funerals or other major festivals. In winter, it is a source of heat and warmth, whereas in summer it’s a source of good luck.

Wang Huo in Huairen county is the grandest because of its well-chosen coals, beautiful shape, and size. Each year, more than 50 large piles of Wang Huo can be seen on the streets of Huairen county. The largest reaches almost 10 meters high, utilizing 80 tons of coal.

During the evening of the Lantern Festival, these Wang Huos looks like flying fire dragons, bringing an omen of “good luck” and “get rich”. The crowds in the local area gather to watch the scene. Some people will encircle the Wang Huo three times in a clockwise direction and three times in an anti-clockwise direction, believing this may bring safety and auspiciousness to the family and make their wishes come true.

The spectacular scene has impressed people from abroad. Many foreign friends have experienced the local tradition. The custom has been named in the Guinness Book of World Records, attracting many tourists to Datong.
