Hundreds of doctors from home and abroad, and entrepreneurs from various sectors, had a brainstorm focusing on the blueprint of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone in Fujian province on Dec 15, one day prior to the opening of an innovation forum here.

The following are some of their takes:

Liu Qiulin (Doctoral candidate in Wave Energy)

As the largest island in Fujian, and the fifth largest in China, Pingtan boasts favorable geographic conditions. Wave energy is an inexhaustible energy that can be converted to electricity or other forms of power. And the technology conforms to Pingtan’s development conception of a smart and ecological island. There are a lot of mechanical designs in wave energy development, and Pingtan can seek cooperation or bring in professionals in this field.

Yang Yang (Doctor with College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University)

Pingtan can bring in professionals in politics, enterprise innovation and management. It can also cooperate with universities by offering students internships in a bid to make them get a better understanding of Pingtan’s business environment and potential. I’ve talked with some of my classmates from Taiwan, who made it clear that the biggest factors affecting their decisions on career start-ups are a transparent, fair business environment, preferential policies and incentives.

Guo Changkun (Chuangli [Hong Kong] Culture Technology Co)

Cooperating with universities will help elevate efficiency for enterprises. Our company, for example, makes a lot of investment in universities, where they develop modules or small products and we proceed with further improvement before putting them on the market. So I suggest companies in Pingtan can have technical exchanges with universities in Taiwan especially in the electronics development.

Liu Zeyu (Doctor with National School of Development, Peking University)

As far as I know, Pingtan is aiming to become a free trade port. I think it will have to stress its unique advantages which differ from those in other free trade zones such as Shanghai and Tianjin. Pingtan can learn from Taiwan in terms of how to make use of its resources to a fuller extent.

Shi Zheng (Fujian Huaxing Venture Investment)

I think Pingtan can mainly focus on development of the financial sector, marine industry, entertainment and cloud data. The entertainment industry is relatively low-end on the list, but it will contribute to the local economy and help keep professionals.

Song Binglu (Doctor in data-mining, Tsinghua University)

The development of the Internet of Things and mobile internet both need exchanges of big data. Pingtan can study the most predominant industry in itself and adjacent areas by data analysis.
