Preliminary work for this year's military recruitment has begun in Pingtan, according to the local recruiting office.

Recruitment has been moved from winter to summer, and school-age individuals or their parents can file applications at designated sites, said the office in a statement issued on June 26, adding that a physical exam will be held in early August.

The military recruitment period has changed for the first time in 23 years in China. Physical checks for recruitment will start on Aug 1 and end Sept 30. Previously the period started on Nov 1.

Recruitment is open to young males between 17 to 24 and females between 17 to 22. Those who have a higher education background or are fresh graduates are favored, said the office.
