Opening up
Since China implemented the policy of reform and opening up, Fuzhou City has successively built state approved economic and technological development zone, bonded zone, bonded logistics park, export-oriented processing quarter, national innovation base to boost export with science and technology, Taiwan business investment zone, and Cross-Strait agricultural cooperation laboratory zone. It enjoys preferential policies from the state on comprehensive reform and financial reform. It is a region in the country boasting the most layers of reform and most complete functions. It is one of the Chinese cities attracting the largest number of foreign investment.

As of today, 81 of the world top 500 businesses have invested or set up offices in Fuzhou. By the end of 2008, Fuzhou has approved 8,908 foreign enterprises, which are worth 15 billion U.S. dollars.
Famous coastal city
Fuzhou, a historical and cultural town with 2,200 years history, is located at the mouth where Min River flows into the sea. It sits west to Taiwan. Fuzhou is known as a city of banyans, as the trees would shelter the town in summer. The Min River and Wulong River traverse the city to rush into the East Sea. Fuzhou “rests its head on mountains, faces the sea, and keeps rivers in the bosom,” featuring all the charms of cities of waters in South Yangtze River. The city contains 146 inland rivers, and plentiful hot spring resources. It is a city in the country with richest resources of fresh water, sea water and hot springs.
Profound cultural foundations
Fuzhou, a place of simple and honest folkways and flourishing cultures, shows profound cultural foundations. In Tang Dynasty, Fuzhou had set up academies for learning. Han Yu, a famous writer of the time, thought that Fuzhou was on a par with the capital city Chang’an in cultural standards. In Ming and Qing dynasties, Fuzhou became a center for the exchange of oriental and western cultures. Li Zexu, the first man “keeping in view the world” in the country, Yan Fu, an enlightenment thinker of the modern era, Bing Xin, a lady of letters, and Shen Baozhen, a founder of Mawei Shipyard, were all born in Fuzhou. Fuzhou was also a cradle of Chinese shipping culture.
Well planned to leap forward
In May 2009, the State Council promulgated Some Opinions on Supporting Fujian Province to Accelerate Constructing the Western Bank Economic Zone of the Taiwan Straits. Developing the region to the west of the Taiwan Straits has become a part of national strategy, supplying an unprecedented opportunity for Fuzhou to take off. The thousand-year-old ancient town is leaping forward under good plans.
