SIPO renews agreement with Australian counterpart

The State Intellectual Property Office and its Australian counterpart, IP Australia, renewed their cooperation agreement on Saturday. According to the agreement, the two authorities will collaborate on patent searches and examinations, quality management, personnel training and exchanges of publications. The agreement was first signed in 2013 to promote the two countries' exchanges and cooperation in trade, technology and culture.

Mediation committee to launch IP call center

The intellectual property mediation committee of Xiamen will launch a 12330 call center later this month to offer IP-related consultations and receive disputes and complaints. The committee has an expert panel to deal with IP disputes. It has handled 424 trademark infringement cases and 110 patent disputes since its establishment in 2012. Local officials encourage professional mediation committees made up of people from markets, industry associations and chambers of commerce.

Province leads ranking for patent applications in China

Companies and individuals in Jiangsu applied for 175,870 patents through the first six months of this year, leading all provinces and regions in China, and showing a 8.3 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. They included 58,416 applications for invention patents, also ranking first nationwide. In the same period, 103,346 patents were granted, ranking the nation's second, including 15,295 for inventions.

Police raid group selling fake iPhones and Sony laptops

Cangning county police recently raided a group of four people selling counterfeit electronic products, involving total potential retail value of more than 350,000 yuan ($54,950). The police received a complaint on Aug 27 and raided the group the next day, seizing 68 counterfeit iPhones and 28 Sony laptops labeled with faked trademarks. The suspects said they purchased the counterfeit products from Guangdong province and sold them in Yunnan. The case is under further investigation.

Guangzhou court launches campaign to recruit judges

The Guangzhou Intellectual Property Court recently launched a campaign to recruit 10 judges from courts across the province. A committee was formed for the selection, with its members including judges, lawyers and IP scholars. The court was established in December 2014, and by Aug 20 had received more than 3,100 cases and concluded 1,403 of them. It is forecast that the court will receive at least 4,500 cases this year.

No piracy complaints at animation copyright fair

No piracy complaints were filed during the seventh China International Animation Copyright Fair recently held in Dongguan, despite them being expected. The five-day gala attracted 458 companies worldwide with more than 1,100 exhibits for contests, as well as more than 600,000 visitors. It received 312 copyright applications, double the number from last year, and 256 of them were registered. Contracts worth 3.6 billion yuan ($565.2 million) were signed during the event.
