Dr. Tan Chong Koay was born in 1950 in Kedah, Malaysia. He founded Pheim Asset Management Sdn Bhd, Malaysia in 1994 and founded Pheim Asset Management (Asia) Pte Ltd Singapore in 1995.
Tan has been practising value investing over the past 38 years with his unique and innovative investment philosophy which is “Never fully invest at all time”.
Pheim SICAV-SIF-ASEAN Emerging Companies Fund (Pheim ASEAN Fund) which is sub-managed by Pheim Asset Management Sdn Bhd Malaysia, set a new long term record in 2014.
The Fund outperformed FTSE ASEAN Index for all the trailing periods from 1-to 19-year periods ending September 30, 2014 in terms of total returns in US Dollars. It also outperformed all its peers in the Morningstar ASEAN Equity Category for all the same trailing periods. Its total return in US Dollars for the 19-year period ending September 30, 2014 was 451.69% vs the FTSE ASEAN Index of 34.51% vs the Top Comparative Fund with 187.18%.
This makes Pheim ASEAN Fund the World Best ASEAN Equity Fund in the ASEAN Equity Category as at September, 2014.
Pheim ASEAN Fund is among the oldest ASEAN Equity funds. It was launched in February, 1995. It invests in all sizes of emerging companies and does not practice concentrated bets.
In October, 2010 Tan was awarded “China Top 10 Financial Intelligent Persons Special Award 2010”. [中華十大財(cái)智人物特別獎(jiǎng)]. In January 2012, Tan was awarded the “Most Respected Chinese Entrepreneurship Award in Asia Pacific” [亞太地區(qū)2012年最受尊敬華人企業(yè)家獎(jiǎng)] by the China Economic Trading Promotion Agency in Beijing. Tan was awarded the “Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award” at Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) in 2010 by Enterprise Asia. He was awarded “Best of the Best Awards 2008 and 2010, CEO of the year for Malaysia” by Asia Asset Management, Hong Kong.
As an overseas Chinese, Tan believes that his achievement for the past 38 years in the field of investment, dominated mainly by westerners, is the glory of Chinese. He believes that knowledge and wealth belong to both individuals and the society.
