Close to the Xiaoyaojin Park in Hefei, the Mingjiao Temple was originally called the Tiefo (Iron Buddha) Temple.
It was first built in the Southern Dynasty (420-589) but had fallen into disrepair by the late Sui Dynasty (581-618). However, the temple underwent reconstruction and expansion in the Dali reign period (766-779) of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and was named the Mingjiaoyuan Temple.
It was renamed the Mingjiao Temple in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), but later was ruined as a result of war. The extant temple was the one rebuilt in the late Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). The temple is composed of the entrance. Hall of Heavenly Kings, Hall of Sakyamuni, Hall of Ksitigarbha, guestrooms and sleeping quarters for monks.

The Mingjiao Temple is an important temple in China. The architecture of the compound consists of the Buddha Halls, Sutra House and Xixiangyuan Garden. There are a main hall and a rear hall, housing over 30 Buddhist statues. The Hall of Sakyamuni has overhanging eaves and rake angles, and is adorned with tinkling wind-chimes. On the ridge of the hall stands a huge tin calabash, shining with silver rays and reaching up into the sky, displaying the majestic and grand architectural features of the Chinese Buddhist temples. With the chimes of bells and drums and the chanting of monks, the temple is cloaked with an almost tangible air of mystery.
