Shanghai, briefly named as Hu and commonly known as 'Pearl of East', is the largest city in China and an international metropolitan. It is administered as a municipality with provincial-level government status in China. Shanghai is one of the most important economical, financial, informational centers of China. Shanghai's agriculture is based mainly on the production of grain with comprehensive development of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery. In 2007, Shanghai's GDP totaled 1.2 trillion RMB, ranking 7th in China. Its resident population has reached 18.58 million. The per capita GDP is 64,591.82 RMB.
上海市簡(jiǎn)稱滬，素有“東方明珠”之稱，中國(guó)第一大城市，國(guó)際化大都市，中央四個(gè)直轄市之一，33個(gè)省級(jí)市政府之一是中國(guó)重要的經(jīng)濟(jì)中心、貿(mào)易中心、金融和信息中心。農(nóng)業(yè)以糧食生產(chǎn)為主，農(nóng)、林、牧、漁綜合發(fā)展。2007年上海市生產(chǎn)總值（GDP）12001.16億元，位居全國(guó)第七。常住人口達(dá)到1858萬(wàn)，人均生產(chǎn)總值64591.82元。
Shanghai is also the largest business centre in China, with its internal and foreign trade volumes both ranking the first in the country, and its total retail volume topping the four municipalities directly under the Central Government. Shanghai has a long and distinguished history. It is also the birth place of the Chinese Communist Party.
As the transportation hub of northern and southern waterway in China, Shanghai has a comprehensive transport network which is characterized by its simultaneous development of railways, highways, airlines and waterways. Shanghai Port is the second largest port in the world and the economic lifeline of the whole city.
