Theft of cables blamed for train crash
By Wu Yong (China Daily)
Updated: 2005-08-02 06:09

Traffic resumed at 12:48 pm yesterday as trains slowly passed the accident site. Most of the injured suffered minor wounds and none is in a life threatening condition, said Qiu Lichun, spokesman for the No 4 Hospital of China Medical University where the injured were taken.

One passenger, a woman in her 30s who only identified herself as Ms Ma, recalled the scene.

"I was lying in bed and suddenly I felt the carriage was turning around. I could hardly figure out what happened before I knocked out," said Ma, who suffered concussion.

Several minutes later, she awoke to screams for help. "I managed to climb out of the carriage, and found it was four to five metres away from the track," she said. "Many were still trapped inside."

It was pitch-black and raining, but Ma tried to help two other passengers out. One hour later, police and about 200 medical workers arrived at the scene. The injured were immediately rushed to hospital.

Ma later learnt that her carriage was the most severely damaged. Four other carriages, including the locomotive, a luggage car and two passenger cars, came off the rails.

"It is really lucky that a lot of passengers got off the train at Shenyang Station," said a train attendant.
