Shenzhen needs landmark architecture: Turk Turk Mustafa Ates has been staying in Shenzhen for nearly a year and says Shenzhen needs landmark architecture to be an international city. "Just like the Space Needle in Seattle and the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai," he said. Ates graduated from the Portland State University in the United States with a degree in economics, then worked for A/D Electronics, Inc. in Seattle and later was sent to its China office as a general manager. "I fell in love with Shenzhen the very first day I reached here. China and Turkey share many similarities. Turkish people care deeply about family and friendship. Chinese are the same way. I really like the warm and friendly atmosphere here," he said. "On the first day I arrived in this city, walked in the street and did not regard myself as a foreigner. I felt like I could immerse myself in the Chinese culture," he said. Ates is learning Chinese in his spare time and he can use simple, everyday Chinese fluently. "Learning Chinese is a big challenge to me, but I am a person who likes to overcome challenges," Ates said with a confident smile. There is an international soccer team in Shenzhen, which organizes friendly matches regularly. Members of the team are all foreigners and Ates is one of them. "I play striker as I like to score," he said. Ates is having a happy life in Shenzhen, but he thinks Shenzhen lacks cultural atmosphere. "I think Shenzhen needs more concerts, plays and art exhibitions," he said.
