Prime Minister Tony Blair will attend the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Singapore in July to promote London's bid just before the vote on which city will host the 2012 Games, his spokesman said on Wednesday.

Blair will talk to IOC members on the eve of their July 6 decision just 24 hours before he hosts the G8 summit of the world's industrialised nations in Scotland.

His spokesman said Blair would be in the air when the winning city was announced.

"London's bid is important to me, the government and to our country and I would be immensely proud to help bring the Games back to London for the first time in 64 years," the Prime Minister said in a statement.

His spokesman said Blair had promised to do everything he physically could to help.

He will then fly directly from Singapore to Scotland to open the Gleneagles summit on the morning of the 6th.

Earlier on Wednesday, the London 2012 team said England soccer captain David Beckham would also attend the summit as an ambassador.

The 30-year-old, who is one of the most widely recognised footballers in the world, will join the London team for the final presentation to the IOC and the vote.

"Winning the 2012 Games will be a huge boost for sport throughout the whole of the country, and that can only be good news," the Real Madrid midfielder said.

London is one of the favourites to host the 2012 Games. Paris, New York, Madrid and Moscow are the other candidates.
