US envoy meets with S Korean official on DPRK nuclear issue

SEOUL: South Korea's top nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac met with Stephen Bosworth, the visiting US special envoy for Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) policies, here on Saturday.

During the meeting, the two sides touched upon a string of issues related to the nuclear issue on the Korea peninsula.

The two sides mainly assessed Pyongyang's recent moves on its nuclear weapons program and its demands for lifting sanctions and holding DPRK-US dialogue, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency quoted government sources as saying.

In a letter to the president of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, the DPRK claimed that the reprocessing of spent fuel rods "is at its final phase and extracted plutonium is being weaponized."

The letter, sent by the permanent representative of the DPRK to the United Nations, also said the "experimental uranium enrichment has successfully been conducted to enter into the completion phase. "

Both sides also reiterated their support to the goal of seeking complete and irreversible denuclearization of the DPRK, while discussed on a "comprehensive package" of incentives for the DPRK, which initially brought up by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak during the South Korea-US summit in Washington in June.

The two officials also discussed ways to relaunch the six-party disarmament talks and strengthen cooperation between Seoul and Washington.

Stephen Bosworth, currently on a three-nation Asian trip, arrived here on Friday after concluding a visit to China. He will also visit Japan.
