Weihai, a picturesque city in the eastern tip of Shandong Peninsula, is located at 36°41′～37°35′N(xiāo) and121°11′～122°42′E. Bounded on three sides by the Yellow Sea, Weihai looks out to Liaodong Peninsula in its north, Korean Peninsula in its east and the islands of Japan in its southeast. The total area is 5, 436 square kilometers, including731 square kilometers of urban area. The coastline is 985.9 kilometers long.

The prefecture-level city of Weihai administers three county-level cities (Rongcheng City, Wendeng City, Rushan City) and four districts (Huancui District, National Torch Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, National Economic and Technical Development Zone and National Free Trade Import and Export Processing Zone). Weihai has a total population of 2.45 million, among which urban population is 0.55 million.

Being one of the open coastal cities, Weihai is a famous port and tourist city in China. It is the first “National Sanitary City” and one of the first group of National Environmental Protection Model Cities. It is one of the forty cities of Excellent Hard Investment Environment and one of the fifty cites of strong comprehensive economic power. In May 2009, Weihai has been titled “National Forest City” (only 14 in China). In 2003, it won “World Habitat Awards” for their “outstanding contribution in improving habitats and city environment”.

The coastline of Weihai is 1,000 kilometers, about one thirds of Shandong province collectively. The three fishing grounds along the coastline form one of the biggest fishing centre rich in more than 300 seafood including prawn, sea cucumber, abalone, shellfish, algae and a variety of cash fish. The city possesses rich mineral resources. Above 30 minerals have been discovered like gold, iron, copper and zinc. Granite in Weihai is of large quantity and good quality, with “Shidao Red”, “Wendeng White” and “Rushan Black” well-known at home and aboard.

Based on a solid industry foundation, a fairly complete manufacturing system has been tentatively formed in Weihai consisting of plastic, silk, medicine, food and artistic handicraft industries，with its backbone on sectors such as machinery, electron, chemical industry, building materials and textile. There are more than 2,000 approved products, among which more than 700 ones have entered markets overseas. Weihai is China’s biggest producer of carpet, fishing rod and miniature woorworking machinery, the second biggest producer of wire and principle production base of agricultural automobile, automobile, connecting rod and juice concentrate. radial wire, high speed facsimile, electronic telephone, terminal display, high energy battery, high efficiency electricity-saving lamp and marine biologicals have emerged to be Weihai’s leading industries and products.

Weihai is the grain production base of Shandong province and key production area of peanut, fruit and aquatic products. It ranks first in the output of aquatic products in China.
