The city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, will export in August 1,400 tons of blue-green algae powders to the United States for bio-plastic production, according to the city's official department responsible for the control of blue-green algae.

The powders for export will be extracted from algae muds and they will contain 10 percent water-holding capacity and more than 35 percent protein content since the blue-green algae in the United States cannot be used for bio-plastic production because it has less than 30 percent protein content.

Wuxi produces three to four tons of blue-green algae muds every year. They are normally processed for use as fertilizers, according to Chen Xuqing who is in charge of the department.

Data showed that six tons of algae muds with 85 percent water holding capacity can be concentrated into one ton of algae power, containing only 10 percent water holding capacity.

The rate for making exported algae powders out of algae muds in 2015 accounts for nearly one fourth of the city's total annual algae muds output. Wuxi produced 3.2 tons of blue-green algae muds in 2013.

The only exported blue-green algae powders' supplier in Wuxi is Delinhai Green Treatment on Algae Co. The company possesses the leading algae-water separation technology in China.
