Irish River Dancing and Russian ballet are just two of 2,008 cultural activities organized by Beijing to celebrate the Olympic Games this summer.
The program, which runs under the banner "Meet in Beijing - 2008 Cultural Events", will last from June to September. Some 10,000 artists from more than 80 countries and regions will gather in the capital and present over 100 world famous plays and nearly 60 large art exhibitions to local audiences.
The performances come in various forms including operas, ballets, modern dance, symphonies, pop concerts and evening galas.
The events will have an international flavor. Highlights include the Irish River Dance, the Russian Star Ballet, an evening concert by the Cinckinnati Pops Orchestra, as well as the opera Tea by Chinese musician Tan Dun.
Compared to similar events in previous Olympic host cities, this year's three-month affair will involve the largest number of performers. More than 2 million people are expected to watch these performances and exhibitions, according to the organizers.
The program is an excellent example of international cultural cooperation on a large scale, said Meng Xiaosi, vice-minister of culture ministry, on Monday.
"To celebrate art and culture with these exciting sporting events, the rich spirit of culture can be added to the core value of hosting a people's Olympics," she added.
Meanwhile, a second program named "Arts for All" hopes to attract Olympic athletes, volunteers, Olympic venue constructors, students, citizens and tourists from home and abroad to Beijing to participate in a range of cultural and art activities.
Tickets for these performances are affordably priced. Discount packages target art lovers, Olympic staff, family buyers, students and Olympic volunteers.
