Kids get their cockpit thrills

Children were taught the functions of the different buttons used by pilots in a cockpit simulator in Haikou, the capital of Hainan province, on June 1. An instructor briefed them on emergency procedures and countermeasures crews use on commercial flights. The organizer, HNA Tourism, a subsidiary of the Chinese aviation-to-hotels conglomerate HNA Group, held the event in 12 cities across China on the same day in celebration of International Children's Day. More than 500 children and their parents participated in event. Guo Bin, a pupil from Southwest China's Yunnan province, said it was the first time he had seen and handled airplane controls up close.

Baidu event helps out youngsters

Up to 2 million yuan ($294,000) poured in during just one hour at an online non-profit charity event held by Baidu Inc in late May to help more than 5,200 children with autism in China. Pictures painted by the children were displayed using augmented reality technology on Baidu's platform. Netizens gave 220 million thumbs up for the paintings, which was turned into cash donations from Baidu.

Beribboned brollies shared out

Students from Guangdong Medical University held an umbrella-sharing activity in last month. Students tied green ribbons onto the umbrellas to indicate they were willing to share the brollies with those in need. Wang Jiongliang, the leader of the activity, said the event aimed to save resources and to promote a friendly atmosphere on campus. "People generally won't ask a passerby for help when they have forgotten to bring an umbrella, because they think being refused is very embarrassing. The event aims to bring strangers together through sharing," Wang added.

Move to restore damaged forest

Guangqi Toyota and China Green Foundation have announced they will work together to help restore 2.8 square kilometers of forest in Dali in Southwest China's Yunnan province which was damaged by a fire in 2014. The area is home to an endangered animal, the golden monkey. A manager of Guangqi Toyota said the fire had led to shrinkage of living space for wildlife, which may cause the decline in the monkey population. The partners will restore 0.27 square kilometers of landscape in the first phase of the work. They said whole project was expected to take five years to complete.

Dairy nutrition taught to students

Major dairy exporter and producer, Fonterra Co-operative Group, taught dairy nutrition knowledge to students in the fourth and fifth grades in two primary schools in Yutian County and Yingxian County in Hebei province on Children's Day on June 1. The two grades also joined in a dairy-based knowledge quiz for prizes.
