Buddhist activities

Updated : 2014-10-24

Buddhist activities at Mount Wutai are being hosted on a daily basis, as well as on special occasions such as festivals.

The daily activity refers to daily Buddhist routines, including morning and evening classes and precept chanting.

As morning class begins before sunrise, all Buddhists must gather together to read Buddhist doctrines, usually at the Buddha, Monju and Avalokitesvara Buddhisatva halls. Due to the high altitude and bitter cold in winter, classes may sometimes be moved to meditation rooms in the morning. Different factions will read different doctrines as a group led by a Buddhist and accompanied by beating wooden fish as part of the chanting practice.

Morning class will be held around sunset with different scripture from the morning classes.

The lama will conduct a sun worship activity with Buddhist music, the nature of which resembles morning and evening classes.

Precept chanting is held every half-month, mostly on the 15th and 30th. Buddhists will get together at the abstinence hall to read precepts and conduct criticism and self-criticism as a way to repent.

Festival Buddhist activities refer to regular special events at ashram, dharma and fast assemblies. They include ashram events in June and various dharma and fast assemblies at Mount Wutai.

The ashram event is a temple affair held in June of Chinese calendar when all temples are opened. Buddhists will wear kasaya, beat bells and wooden fish, chant scriptures, and worship Buddha. Some senior Buddhists will give lectures to carry forward doctrines.

The Ten Temple dharma assembly is held in April of the Chinese lunar calendar as the biggest activity in Mount Wutai’s green temples (a school of Buddhism). Buddhists from Bishan, Guangzong, Yuanzhao, Xiantong, Tayuan, Shuxiang, Nanshan, Jin’ge, Yong’an and Linjing temples will get together at Dafo and Manjusri halls to worship Buddha and recite scriptures.

A fast meeting involves practicing abstinence from meat and worshipping Buddha according to certain Buddhist rules.

Special Buddhist activities are held for special needs. Some are held by individuals, while others by groups. They can involve building towers and temples, sculpting Buddhist figures and scriptures, interpreting and listening to sermons, and passing on precepts.
