The Moragahakanda Dam (M Dam), Sri Lanka's biggest water conservancy project, currently being constructed by Sinohydro Bureau 14 Co, entered trial operations with all generators connected and tested, company media reported on June 9, 2017.

Located in the northeast of Sri Lanka's central provinces, M Dam is a multi-functional project capable of water diversion, irrigation and power generation.

After completion, M Dam will be able to hold 600 million cubic meters of water. With a total installed capacity of 25 MW, its generators are expected to produce 80,000 MW of electricity per year. The surplus power will be transferred to other regions.

Dubbed as the Sri Lankan version of "South to North Water Diversion", M Dam is a key infrastructure project crucial to people's livelihood and economic development in central and northern Sri Lanka.

The construction of M Dam proved challenging due to the tropical rainforest environment and subtropical marine monsoon climate of the region.

However, Sinohydro managed to get past these difficulties and put M Dam into trial operation on schedule, with all generator sets running normally and parameters meeting standards.

M Dam, along with the Kaluganga Dam (also being constructed by Sinohydro), will put an end to the country's uneven distribution of water resources and provide the regional economy with a continuous electricity supply.
