Taicang Port has claimed the 39th spot on a list of the top 100 busiest global ports, compiled by maritime insurer and underwriter Lloyd's, on Aug 30.

The port in Jiangsu has climbed up eight places from the previous list in 2015, thanks to a throughput of 3.71 million containers as of August this year. The ranking puts it ahead of ports in London, Barcelona and Osaka.

Taicang Port has benefitted from the strategic opportunity of the One Belt and Road Initiative, the projects of Yangtze River economic delta and the Shanghai Free Trade Zone.It has focused on the improvement of cooperation and innovation, construction of docks and increasing ship routes and fleets.

The port has cooperated with its counterparts in Shanghai and Ningbo, on the Shanghai international shipping center's circulation. It also shares the same customs clearance procedures as Shanghai Port.

Taicang Port is the only river port in China to be managed with the same regulations and charge policies of sea harbors, like Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port.

The port is home to five zones of operation; containers, general cargo, dry bulk cargo, liquid chemicals and equipment manufacturing. It covers 22 offshore harbors and 66 harbors along the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal, trading goods and natural resources such as wood and iron ore.

As of July 2016, there has been a year-on-year increase of container throughput of 10.3 percent. The cargo handling capacity stands at 0.13 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 17.5 percent, which includes 42.61 million tons of foreign trade.
