The panorama of Tonghua city, Jilin province

Tonghua is located in the southeast of Jilin province, and faces the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) across the Yalu River. It's an open border city, one of the three open ports to the DPRK, and a trade and logistics center, as well as a regional transportation hub in the east of Northeast China. The city covers an area of 15,600 square kilometers, and has a population of 2.3 million. It comprises two cities, three counties, two districts and a development zone. Meihekou was named a provincial reform site.

Natural sight of Yalu River

Tonghua has a long history of culture, and is a Koguryo culture heritage site and the birthplace of the Shamanism culture. The city is home to the Koguryo kindom and imperial tombs that were on the world cultural heritage list. Tonghua is also famous for its traditional Chinese medicine, grape wine, ginseng, Songhua inkstone, high quality rice and skiing activities.

The city has now developed multiple industries featuring medicine, metallurgy and food as pillar, tourism, new building materials, machinery manufacturing, chemical, energy, information and culture as competitive industries. It has six national forest parks, six national AAAA scenic areas, and 13 key cultural relics under State protection, making it an ideal tourism resort.

The city is closest to the sea in Jilin and has become a transportation hub as a local airport went into operation. The city advocates sincerity, tolerance, responsibility, business development and self-improvement, and will transform itself into a new industrial base and livable landscape city in North China.
