Historical relics, modern fun highlight transit hub

China Daily Europe | Updated: 2015-06-28 10:37

Editor's note: As a transportation hub of Central China, Wuhan links all cities across the nation through air, rail, river and sea routes. Its high-speed railway allows residents to go to 18 provinces within five hours.

The city is bordered to the west by the Three Gorges in Chongqing; Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province, to the northwest; Huangshan Mountain in Anhui province to the east; Zhangjiajie National Nature Park in Hunan province to the south; and Shaolin Temple in Henan province to the north.

Here are some tourist attractions in Wuhan:

Huanghelou (Yellow Crane Tower), a popular tourist attraction in Wuhan.

Yellow Crane Tower

Known in Chinese as Huanghelou, it is the most iconic historical site in Wuhan. This national 5A scenic spot is one of the three most notable pavilions in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. First built during the Three Kingdoms (AD 220-280), it was moved and reconstructed in 1981 one kilometer from its original site at the top of Snake Hill.

Address: West slope of Snake Hill, Wuchang district

Hubei Provincial Museum

Located near the East Lake, the museum holds a collection of more than 200,000 cultural relics dating back to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). It boasts the world's largest bronze musical instrument, the clime bells, that was unearthed from the 2,400-year-old tomb of Marquis Yi of the Zeng State in 1978; the sword of Gou Jian, king of the Yue State in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC); and the fossils of two skulls discovered in Yun county in 1989 and 1990.

Former concession area

More than 100 years ago when the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was sinking into bankruptcy, foreign nations bailed out the declining dynasty with massive loans. In return, foreigners were given concession areas, one of them being Wuhan. In 1861, Hankou became the concession area for five countries - the United Kingdom, Russia, France, Germany and Japan, and was home to 12 foreign consulates, 30 foreign financial institutes and over 100 foreign firms. Western-style architecture is rife along the Lihuangpo Road and Shengli Street, many of which have been well preserved by the city government.

Han Show Theater

The theater is a live stage combining dance and acrobatics. It is located at the eastern end of Han Street and is built in the shape of traditional Chinese lantern. It has the world's first auditorium seating that can move and rotate.

Address: Han Street, Wuchang district

Wanda Movie Park

As the world's first indoor movie-themed park, the Wanda Movie Park is built in the shape of chimes. It has six entertainment areas, such as the 5D theater and Space theater, and opened in December 2014.

Address: Han Street, Wuchang district
