North Korea: U.S. plotting South Korea occupation
North Korea on Saturday criticized Washington's alliance with Seoul as a facade to cover up a U.S. plan to occupy South Korea by force. "The United States is pretending to be a protector of South Korea ... but it is definitely an aggressor, an occupier," said a spokesman at the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland. Washington has a "wicked intent to strengthen its colonial rule and militarist occupation of South Korea and to make South Korea a victim of the U.S. scheme to wage a war of aggression," the unidentified spokesman was quoted as saying by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency. North Korea is at odds with the United States over its nuclear weapons programs. The North has stayed away from six-nation nuclear talks aimed at ending its nuclear ambitions, citing what it calls a hostile U.S. policy toward Pyongyang. Washington has repeatedly said it has no intention of invading the North. About 32,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in a cease-fire, leaving the two Koreas technically at war. |
