Vice Premier Wu Yi arrives in Japan for visit Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi arrived in Japan on Tuesday for meetings with Japanese officials and a trip to the World Expo for talks with Toyota executives.
The eight-day visit by Wu, considered one of China's top "problem-solvers," was part of a series of trips by officials of both countries to revive relations following violent anti-Japan protests in China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry only said that Wu would meet with unspecified Japanese officials and discuss "matters of mutual interest." The Japanese Foreign Ministry also provided no details on whom she would meet. Japan's largest newspaper, Yomiuri, said Wu is expected to meet with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday, but Yu Kameoka, a Koizumi spokesman, could not confirm the report. Wu was scheduled to attend a banquet hosted by Shoichiro Toyoda, the chairman of the Japan-China Investment Promotion Organization, on Tuesday evening. Toyoda is honorary chairman of Toyota Motor Corp. On Wednesday, she was to attend a forum on the development of Chinese cities. A Transport Ministry official said the ministry is making arrangements for talks between Wu and Japanese Transport Minister Kazuo Kitagawa, who is to attend the forum. Her visit comes as the two countries are at odds over natural resources, East China Sea islands and interpretations of wartime history. The visit comes after Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Shotaro Yachi went to Beijing to meet with Chinese counterpart Dai Bingguo. The two failed to agree on compensation for damage caused by mass
anti-Japan demostration across China last month, but said they might meet
again in Tokyo as early as June. |
