A society was established in Shaoxing, a city of east China's Zhejiang Province, to protect the former homes of distinguished Chinese.

The society's establishment will promote academic research on the protection and utilization and eventually enhance development of the cultural resources, said Ma Zishu, vice council chairman of China Museum Institute.

Delegates from 27 former residences of deceased personages across the country jointly launched a declaration early this month.

According to the declaration, the social body will hold forums on the protection and utilization of the celebrities' former homes, aiming to strengthen exchange and cooperation in protecting and developing them as cultural resources.

Former residences of notable people, integrated with architecture, human culture and cultural relics, are places where their owners once lived and people today can cherish the memory of them and ponder on the past, the declaration said.

A distinguished personage's former residence can be considered "a city's soul," playing an important role in local culture, it said.

This function of the buildings hasn't been fully recognized due to the lack of communication and exchange between the places, it said.

There are about 400 such former residences across the country, Ma said.
