Top leaders of China and Nigeria agreed Monday to take further measures to deepen bilateral ties.

Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo met with President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo and reached a consensus to seek a long-term and stable partnership.

Wu said that China is satisfied with the bilateral economic co-operation in recent years, which is in great part a result of the president's efforts.

He said China attaches importance to working with Nigeria in such sectors as oil development, infrastructure, telecommunication and electrical power.

Obasanjo said Nigeria encourages enterprises from both countries to co-operate in these sectors.

He said Nigeria welcomes investment from Chinese enterprises.

Three agreements were signed yesterday.

One is on bilateral economic and technical co-operation and another on exploration of Nigerian oil fields.

China's Huawei Tech Investment Co Ltd also signed an memorandum with Nigeria on transferring telecommunication technology.

Considering the quick development of globalization, enhanced bilateral economic and trade partnerships may provide long-term benefits to both countries, said Wu, who is chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

He also commented positively on Nigeria's policies that aim to safeguard national stability and improve the economy.

President Obasanjo, has been an outspoken advocate of co-operation and dialogue among developing countries.

Wu praised the president, who is now also chairman of the African Union, for making important contributions to peace and development in Africa.

The two leaders also discussed the question of Taiwan.

Obasanjo reiterated Nigeria's policy of supporting China's reunification cause.

Obasanjo also expressed appreciation for China's achievements in economic and social affairs.

Nigeria is the last stop of Wu's four-nation African official visit, which also took him to Kenya, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The tour has been described by Lu Congmin, the spokesman of the delegation, as a "successful visit" that has enhanced the traditional partnership with African countries.

Lu said, the visit shows China's new leadership attaches great importance to relationships in Africa.

Since the end of last year, top Chinese officials, including President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice-President Zeng Qinghong have visited African countries.
