One dies, one missing in shipping collision A collision Thursday morning between a Chinese ship and a South Korean vessel off the North China coast near Lushun has claimed one life, officials said Thursday.
The collision, which occurred at 38.21 degree north latitude and 121.23 degree east longitude, caused the Chinese ship to sink, with its crew of 19 falling overboard, according to the Maritime Rescue Centre of Liaoning Province. Search-and-rescue work for the missing sailor was under way Thursday with the help of a helicopter from China's north sea rescue squadron and a warship dispatched by the Lushun naval base. The 17 rescued sailors received medical treatment in Lushun and Dalian, a major port in Liaoning, according to the rescue centre there. The South Korean Saehan Galaxy ship, carrying liquefied gas, collided with the Chinese ship Jingan No 6 around 6:30 am, according to the rescue centre. The South Korean's were headed to Dalian. The Chinese ship had a crew of 19 and carried 60 tons of heavy oil, 20 tons of machine oil and four tons of lubricating oil, according to the rescue centre. |
