Masood Khan: Pakistan's Ambassador to China

Updated: 2009-08-18 16:00 Mr. Masood Khan was appointed as Pakistan's Ambassador to the People's Republic of China in September 2008. From March 2005 to September 2008, Ambassador Masood Khan served as Pakistan's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva. Mr. Masood Khan, an official of Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has served in Islamabad and abroad for 28 years. Over the years, he has acquired expertise in various facets of Pakistan's foreign policy, including multilateral diplomacy, security and disarmament issues, human rights, and social development, as well as Pakistan’s relations with China, South Asia and the United States. From August 2003 to March 2005, he worked as Director General (United Nations) at the Foreign Office. From September 2003 to May 2004, he served as Director General (Disarmament). In June 2003, he was appointed as Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position he held till March 2005. From November 2002 to August 2003, he worked as Director General (East Asia and Pacific). Mr. Khan has served, in various diplomatic positions, in Pakistan's Embassies in Beijing, The Hague and Washington DC. He also worked in Pakistan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, from 1993 to 1997. Mr. Khan has widely spoken at various fora on Pakistan's foreign policy and international diplomacy. He has delivered lectures in premier Pakistani institutions as well as at major universities and think tanks in the US, the UK, Germany, Italy, Japan, France, Mexico, UAE and Lithuania. Over the years, he has also specialized in international conferences and multilateral diplomacy. At the United Nations and in international conferences, Mr. Khan has been a frequent representative and negotiator for Pakistan. Mr. Khan has assumed several leadership positions. These included: President of the Conference on disarmament; President of the 6th Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC); Chairman of the Group of 77 and China; Chairman of the Sub-Committee of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS); Coordinator of the OIC Group in Geneva; Chairman of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council; Chairman of the Governmental Group in the International Labour Organization (ILO); Chairman of the International Labour Conference (ILC) Reform Committee; and Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Before joining the Foreign Service of Pakistan, Mr. Khan was a lecturer in English. During that period he was also a TV presenter and English newscaster with Radio Pakistan. After joining the service, he studied Chinese at the Beijing Language Institute. Mr. Khan is married. He has two daughters and one son.
