China Southern Airlines Co Ltd, the operator of the flight, replaced the 787 with an Airbus 330.
The 787 Dreamliner was originally scheduled to depart from Guangzhou at noon and to fly to Beijing, but it was delayed for more than four hours.
The airline said on its Weibo account that the poor visibility at the Beijing Capital International Airport was not suitable for the plane's newly trained captain.
According to regulations, newly trained captains need a visibility of more than 1,600 meters.
China Southern Airlines trained 86 pilots, including 43 captains, specifically for the 787 Dreamliner.
The new plane arrived in China on June 2 and was tested for three days after delivery.
