Official calls for enhanced cross-Strait exchanges

Promoting cross-strait exchanges and cooperation to seek common development has become a mainstream of public opinion in Taiwan and general consensus of both sides, said Jia Qinglin, the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Chairman of the People's Political Consultative Conference.

Jia, said on Saturday when meeting people with all circles including Taiwan in the 2nd Straits Forum held in Xiamen, that he was confident that the peaceful development of cross-strait relations will maintain good momentum, with the public support and the growing interaction between the civil societies on both sides.

He noted the change and development of cross-strait relations depends on people. He expressed his will that anyone can communicate equally and interacted nicely with each other in the Forum, regardless of parties or sectors, as long as in favor of strengthening cross-strait cooperation and exchanges.

Jia described the three-day forum “a private exchange platform established by both sides together” and “a creative initiative to promote a peaceful development of cross-strait relations”. Populism and popularity are distinctive features of the forum, he noted, the participants are mainly from both sides, especially the grassroots.

Vice-Chairman of Kuomingtang Huang Min-Hui indicated that compared to the first forum, the second forum have more specific topics with broader representation. Strengthening the exchange can reduce misunderstanding, and continuing communication can reach more consensuses, she said.

Also attended the meeting there are Vice chairman of stading committee of 11th National People's Congress Chen Zhili and Zhou Tienong, and a number of party leaders in Taiwan, and representatives from 25 places in Taiwan.
