China to launch inspection of construction projects

BEIJING - Chinese authorities are to launch a month-long inspection of major construction projects and the implementation of policies to boost economic growth as part of a two-year campaign against corruption and misconduct in the construction sector.

A total of 21 teams will be sent to 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country for the inspection, said an unnamed official after officials from the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Ministry of Supervision met to discuss cleaning up the construction sector Tuesday.

Another three inspection teams will focus on low-income housing, water engineering and state-funded projects.

Another main focus of the inspection was the use of money and materials for reconstruction after the May 12 earthquake.

"Supervision should be strengthened especially for projects that are closely related to people's benefits and have considerable influence on the development of social economy," said He Yong, deputy secretary of the commission, the CPC's anti-graft body, at the meeting.

He called for greater scrutiny of spending of funding from the central government and the quality of construction projects, especially in corruption-prone phases, such as bidding, approval and transfer of land and mining rights and project alteration.

According to figures released on March 5, the country's discipline inspection authorities had investigated 5,803 cases linked to the construction sector, and had penalized 3,374 people since the campaign started in July last year.
