Mutual trust and co-op

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's China tour scheduled for Friday is an important high-level visit since the Obama administration took office. At this new historic juncture, the two countries should stick to the right direction of their constructive cooperation and push their bilateral ties further forward.

The course of Sino-US relationship is clearly defined as one between stakeholders and constructive partners. Their bilateral ties are characterized by mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, rather than a zero game.

Optimistic on relation

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said "China and the US will discuss a number of global and regional issues of mutual interest including bilateral ties and cooperation in tackling the global financial crisis."

Jiang is optimistic about the ties between China and the new US government, saying the two sides have kept in "close contact" since the Obama administration took office last month.

Korean nuclear issue

Washington also needs Beijing to play a positive role in resolving regional hot spots. The Korean nuclear issue has brought Beijing and Washington together to seek the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Economic ties 'central'

US' economic relationship with China is still the central issue - Beijing holds nearly $700 billion in US Treasury securities - but the Obama administration wants China to be a central player on a range of other issues...

Obama and Clinton believe that a sincere effort to engage China in reducing carbon emissions will improve chances of getting a deal in Copenhagen in December, where a new post-Kyoto treaty on climate change is due to be negotiated.

Bilateral links pivotal

Mrs Clinton once noted that the US-China relationship is the century's most important one, and thus developing bilateral ties will be a pivotal point during her first trip to China as Secretary of State.

Most importantly, for the Obama administration which views overcoming economic crisis as the top priority, ties with China will be very important as China now holds nearly $700 billion in US Treasury securities.
