Adele is an English singer-songwriter. Her second album 21 made her a leading artist worldwide and earned her numerous mentions in the Guinness Book of World Records. At the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009, Adele received the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

In 2014, Adele was already being regarded as a British cultural icon, with young adults from abroad naming her among a group of people they most associated with UK culture, which includes William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth II, David Beckham, J.K. Rowling, The Beatles and Elton John.
