The ring played the main role of jewelry for thousands of years in China, but was not used as a symbol of marriage until a few decades ago.
In western countries, the first diamond ring used for engagement was by Archduke Maximilian of Austria in Vienna in 1477 who gave it to Mary of Burgundy.
