The Shanghai intellectual property office held its Patent Information Annual Conference of Shanghai 2013 on June 30, the first time of such an event in Shanghai.

Lv Guoqiang, director of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration (SIPA) attended the meeting and gave a speech, in which he explained the background to patent applications and licensing in Shanghai during 2013. They had several noticeable features, such as the improvement in patent quality, optimization of the patent structure, the stable leading position of enterprises and the ability to apply for licensed items.

SIPA published the first systematic patent information of Shanghai at the conference, and this data recorded the rapid development of careers in municipal patents.

"The patent innovations will accelerate Shanghai into becoming a central city dealing with Asia-Pacific intellectual property, and will also contribute to building an innovation-oriented society," Lv said.

According to SIPA, in 2013 the number of invention patent applications for enterprises reached 24,363, accounting for 62.2% of the total amount of patent applications. The quantity of enterprise invention patent authorizations was 6,053 , which made up 56.9% of the total of authorized patents.

The Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (Shanghai), Baoshan Iron & Steel Corporation, and Shanghai Hua Hong NEC Electronics Company are listed as the top three enterprises in invention patent authorizations.

Until the end of 2013, the city's total effective invention patents were 48,370, an increase of 20% over the same period of the previous year. And the registration of 20.3 patents per annum for each 10,000 head of population, was just 16 items more than the national average.

The annual top ten districts for invention patent authorizations were Minhang, Pudong, and Yangpu.

Some press representatives also attended the conference and took actions in dialogues with local enterprises and district intellectual property offices.
