(Xinhua)
Updated: 2009-05-21 21:40 BEIJING -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's brief visit to Europe has put a spotlight on the mutual political trust, pragmatic cooperation and friendship that China shares with the European Union, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Wednesday. The world currently is undergoing complicated and profound changes, Yang said after Wen's visit to Europe. He noted that the international financial crisis continues to deepen and spread and the world is facing increasingly tougher global challenges such as climate change and energy security.
In facing the new opportunities and challenges, Yang said, China and the EU urgently need to enhance their coordination and cooperation. During the visit, Chinese and EU leaders had extensive exchanges of views on Sino-EU relations and cooperation. China-EU Political Trust Enhanced Elaborating on the great significance of China-EU relations for each other and the rest of the world, the Chinese premier said during the visit that the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two sides goes with the tide of historical development. The partnership constitutes mutually beneficial exchanges between two age-old civilizations and frank and sincere dialogues between different social systems, Wen said, adding it will benefit the two peoples as well as the international community. In the complex and volatile world today, the determined joint efforts by China and the EU to deepen their cooperation for their common and harmonious development is ultimately conducive to world harmony and sustainable development, Wen said. Yang noted that the Chinese premier further defined Sino-EU ties during the summit, putting emphasis on its strategic, comprehensive nature and the necessity of advancing with times.
China is willing to make good friends and good partners with the EU to promote common development and achieve a win-win outcome through harmonious coexistence and close cooperation, Wen said. The EU shared with Wen's view on the strategic and comprehensive partnership between the two sides and expressed its commitment to deepening this partnership, said the Chinese foreign minister. The European side also expressed its willingness to work with China to enhance cooperation through dialogues to effectively deal with global issues and challenges. EU leaders said they would take an impartial and objective attitude towards China's market economy status and indicated their political will to consider lifting the arms embargo against China. The bloc said it highly values China's positive and constructive role in the international arena and believes that China will make greater contribution to world peace and stability. |
