Carey Mulligan is living in a backpackers hotel.

The 25-year-old British actress - who earns over $5 million per movie -moved into the Best Western hotel in Los Angeles after finding herself homeless following the reported breakdown of her relationship with boyfriend of one year Shia LaBeouf.

A staff member at the hotel told MailOnline: "This is more a place for back-packers, students and those on a budget. We pride ourselves on being clean and tidy but this is a long way from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

"I was stunned when I saw Carey walking across the lobby. You would expect her to stay at the Four Seasons, not here. She is very easy-going. She hasn't made any special requests and doesn't ask to be treated any differently. She keeps herself to herself and seems quite happy here."

Carey - who is currently filming heist drama 'Drive' nearby - spends all her free time in the coffee shop of the $100 a night hotel.

A waitress there said: "She spends most nights here. She comes back after filming and looks tired. I don't think she's been partying. She often wears a hat and keeps her head down.

"She prefers to blend in. She eats here, but she also shops at the Gelson's supermarket down the street and brings food back to eat in her room."

A friend revealed that lonely Carey is planning to move back to England as soon as her filming commitments finish.

The pal said: "She doesn't have a lot of things and lives out of a suitcase. She doesn't have too many friends in LA - her closest friends are her publicists."
