Angelina Jolie and brother James Haven consider themselves orphans following the recent death of their mother--even though their father Jon Voight is very much alive.

Actor Haven, whose mother Marcheline Bertrand lost a long battle with ovarian cancer on Jan. 27, claims Jolie's empathy for parentless children comes from her very own experience with their father.

Haven says, "There were times when our father was awesome but my biggest memory is that he would look more to our faults than to our strengths, and that's what was so hard.

"Now that our mother has died we're two orphans, Angie and I, so she has a deep understanding of the orphans she adopts."

Jolie and partner Brad Pitt are parents to three adopted children--Maddox, 5, Zahara Marley, 2, and Pax Thien, 3, as well as biological child Shiloh Nouvel, 10 months.
