Shanghai Industrial Holdings Ltd (SIHL)said it has agreed to buy a 40 percent stake in State-owned Shanghai Urban Development (Holdings) Ltd for 2.13 billion yuan as part of the company's plans to enter the Chinese mainland real estate market.

SIHL, which is engaged in health, food and toll road ventures, said in a statement that the acquisition will be funded using the company's internal resources.

Company chairman Cai Lai Xing also said that the firm sees real estate as becoming one of its core businesses.

He said the acquisition of the stake in Shanghai Urban Development represents the company's "resourceful entry into the real estate market in Shanghai, and to help SIHL quickly establish real estate as one of its core businesses."

Shanghai Urban has a land bank of more than 2 million square meters of gross floor area, consisting of commercial and residential development projects.

Shanghai Urban's projects include the Xujiahui Center, which has a site area of 13.2 hectares and is considered the largest comprehensive commercial project in downtown Shanghai.
