University students name top 10 wasteful phenomena on campus

Students at China's prestigious Peking University (PKU) have listed issuing excessive leaflets among the top 10 wasteful phenomena on campus.
The list, issued in late December, was formulated based on a month of opinion poll at the PKU, said Tan Yufei, secretary of the Youth Volunteers' Association of the PKU's College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
"We hope the list could raise the awareness of students and reduce wasteful acts in the future," Tan said.
There have always been too many leaflets distributed near the Sanjiaodi, or triangle area, a famous site for bulletin boards, said Yang Hua, a PKU student.
The information of student activities should have been posted on the BBS, or the Bulletin Board System, which could save a considerable amount of paper, Yang said.
A copy shop on campus consumes more than 10,000 pieces of paper everyday, and most of them are single-side printed, said shopkeeper Luo Yihua. "There are more than a dozen copy shops in the university."
"It's indeed a waste. But few students care about that, since a piece of hard copy only costs 0.1 yuan (1.5 cents)," Luo said.

He estimated the weight of dining hall leftovers collected daily on the campus at five tonnes.
Beside excessive leaflets and leftovers, overuse of electricity and disposable table wares were also seen as wasteful.
Tan said they have come out with proposals aimed at raising students' sense of resource conservation and reducing waste on campus.
